Marriage is an institution that is often hard to define. The state, religion and traditions affect the institution. So much has been said about it but, you need to get factual information, if you want to really know the marriage rights. Every place has its own sets of laws that govern marriage. A civil marriage is different from a religious marriage or a traditional one. In the United States, civil marriage rights have been defined and over the last fifty years, a lot of diversity has been observed. When you want to understand marriage rights, you must go to the laws and find out exacctly what they say about marriage in your area of location. In the United State of America, you will find over 1000 federal laws dedicated to married people. This is what differentiates them from single people legally. It is worth noting that these rights and laws apply to male and female marriages.
The following are some of the rights and benefits that a spouse has when their partner dies or divorces them. The first thing is social security pension. This is an insurance programe that is funded by taxes of the federal insurance contributors act. It ensures that spouses are taken care of during their old age. The security also includes disability as well as other aspects. Other rights that a spouse can claim are the survivor’s benefits. This is mainly for federal employees. There are so many rights that you will read about and the best thing is to be armed with the relevant information. Turning our focus to gay people, their rights to marriage have not been actualized in many states of the world. Canada is one of the few countries that allows same sex marriage to take place. As a result, many gays have been on the forefront advocating for their rights. They sited the lack of justice to emanate from inequality and discrimination. Reading through a court ruling in the UK about a gay couple who were petitioning for their marriage to be recognized, a judge admitted that there was discrimination.
This is the reason why the gay couples were treated differently. However, he stated that this discrmination was justified. He gave the reason for this to be, to protect traditional definition of marriage. The definition involves a man and a woman who produce children as a result. The bottom line is, the UK judge in this case stated that the gay union does not equal a marriage. This has not gone well with people involved and their supporters. In many countries, the fight goes on as they see equal marriage rights. The above example involved Sue Wilkinson and Ceilia Kitzinger. A couple who decide to go to Canada and tie the knot. After they were married, they went back home to the Uk and got involved in the legal battle to legitimize their marriage. The ruling was discouraging but, they vowed not to give up; they would appeal. They were ordered to pay 25,000 pounds to the government. They believe that one day, their rights will be honored just like other men and women.
